Derrick Freske is a young lifestyle photographer from Michigan. He was obsessed with photography after taking a photography class in high school, but after graduation he didn't see photography as a career option. He went to college in Detroit for architecture, and after three years, he dropped out. His new plan was to move to LA, and become a full-time photographer. Freske first started sharing his photos on Instagram where he started gaining a very large following.
Freske's work is mostly that of colorful portraits. He plays with color and lighting to add fun light and moods in his photography. He has a modern neon photography style that makes his work appealing to the eye. All of his photos are perfectly unique, while also retaining his personal style. After moving to Los Angeles, Freske had a lot of inspiration from his surroundings and fellow photographers. The LA scene is amazing, but highly competitive. Also, as a photographer who became popular on Instagram, he often refers back to go back to the community who helped build him up. Freske has helped me to explore more fun props and colored lighting in my photography. I've been inspired to work with long exposures, neon lights, and reflective material. I also enjoy how his models are diverse and he highlights how the are unique in his photos. I plan to work with more diverse styles, models, and ideas in my photography. |
The original photo(left) is a scene of a girl laying in bed, her hair flowing around her right shoulder, and with a red translucent heart over her face. I wanted to re-create this photo while making it more warm toned, the original is a cool bright light, while mine is a soft warm light. I could not work out the red heart, so I made one out of tape and colored it with red sharpie. I interpret the first image as showing that the girl is in love, in some way. However in my photo I wanted to make it seem as if the love was just out of reach, which explains why it's only layered over a part of her face.

For this photo I had to shoot in a completely dark room, while I had my friend hold the colored light source. In the original, he uses lights with gels over them. But I don't have those, so I went for a colored light source. I then had him hold them in opposing directions with two different colors. I also made them a long exposures, so that I could use some string lights in the back to make fun golden lines. The final photo(right) is two photos layered together.

The original photo(left) has a kaleidoscope look to it. Because I don't have a kaleidoscope I could shoot through, I took one photo and had to layer multiple cut outs of the same subject onto each other. I then messed with the color balance of each layer, making them more blue or magenta. I made them more magenta as they go father to the right, similar to the original(left).
